Sumela Monastery Legend


The monastery in Trabzon Maçka is the oldest building in history.
Zigana was built on the skirts of the mountain. The structure was made in places that are very difficult in terms of nature. The Meryemana River flows near Sümela.

There are legends about the construction and construction of the monastery. According to the belief, there were two priests, the Greek Barnabas and the Sophronius. These priests had seen the Mother Mary in a dream somewhere. This is where Sumela is found. Without knowing each other, these two priests set out on the foundation of the monastery, telling the dream they saw. The main name of the monastery is Meryem Ana Monastery. Sümela is the name of Rumcadaki. It is estimated that the monastery was completed in 395 AD.

How to get to Sümela Monastery?
The monastery goes by a certain amount of vehicles, then through a path through the forest. The monastery is reached after long, narrow and high stairs are reached. The monastery was later restored by the Republic of Turkey and became a present day and was opened for tourism.
